Prof J Curtice - Scottish Parliamentary Election and EU Referendum

Thu, Mar 17th 2016 at 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

In addition to his role at the University of Strathclyde, Prof. Curtice is also the President of the British Polling Council and he will address the Club on polling information for the upcoming Scottish Elections and EU Referendum

There were a number of guests at last Thursdays meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw to hear the speaker John Kevin Curtice, FRSA, FRE, FBA who is a political scientist and is currently Professor of Politics at the University of Strathclyde and Senior Research Fellow at NatCen Social Research. He is particularly interested in electoral behaviour and researching political and social attitudes. He was educated at Truro School and Magdalen College, Oxford where he read Politics, Philosophy and Economics, and is married with one daughter.

Having taken a keen interest in the debate for Scottish independence, he opened by saying that 2014 was a remarkable year as was 2015 and that 2016 was shaping up to be even more remarkable. In May, there is the Scottish Parliamentary Election, followed, in June, by the UK wide EU Referendum. He talked at length about both events, providing up to date pollster information highlighted on charts giving details of how all the parties concerned were performing to date.

In concluding he said there were two ballots - in Scotland it was about Independence - in the UK it was about Independence and inevitably they were intertwined. After his address, Professor Curtice gave comprehensive answers to a large number of questions from an enthusiastic audience.
