Greg goes to India with Polio Team

Greg Maskalick of Church Wilne Rotary Club shares his experience of being part of a National Immunisation Day in India.

At the latest meeting of Hucknall Rotary Club, Greg Maskalick – who is a long-standing friend of the club – spoke about his trip to Bhiwadi, India as part of a team of Rotarians, WHO, UNICEF and India Government workers to administer the polio vaccine.Polio is a crippling and potentially fatal infectious disease. There is no cure, but there are safe and effective vaccines. The strategy to eradicate polio by Rotary and its partner organisations, is therefore based on preventing infection by immunizing every child until transmission stops and the world is polio-free.

National Immunisation Days are planned for at risk countries. The latest Task Force comprised on volunteers from all over the world who delivered two drops of the vaccine to 127,000 across India on one day.  Greg Maskalick shared how the team of 21 rotarians went out to rural Bhiwadi, and described in great detail the poverty-stricken conditions they found.  In just 10 hours. Greg’s team were able to deliver the vaccine to 27,000 children.

Greg Maskalick is a member of Church Wilne Rotary Club and in July, will become an Assistant Governor with oversight for the Hucknall club.
