Tonight’s guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw was Lauren Penman who, as a sixteen year old pupil at Dalziel High School, attended the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) course in 2012. After school, Lauren went onto further education attending Anniesland College, now known as Glasgow Clyde College, where she obtained her HNC then HND in Visual Communications. She then went on to Abertay University, in Dundee, where she is in the final year of her BA Honours degree in Visual Communication and Media Design. Whilst attending university, she studied Mandarin and spoke to the members telling them who she was, where she came from and the courses she was undertaking at Abertay. Lauren said she was very interested in music, and, in particular, the styles of album sleeves covering Korean Pop and David Bowie. Currently, Lauren has two jobs working at the Hilton in Bellshill and as representative for Avon Cosmetics, both of which she likes very much. Lauren designs Sci Fi costumes and attends conventions where she raises money for her two charities CHAS and UNICEF. Lauren said that attending RYLA had given her the confidence to participate in the many challenges she was now undertaking. In the future she hopes to work as a freelance graphic designer but at present she is building up her portfolio.
