Tonight's meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw was a business meeting at which the various convenors gave members an update of what was happening with their respective committees.
President Elect, Andrew Murray advised that:
Øthe Burns Supper has been arranged for 26th January and most of the entertainment is in place
ØFollowing on from this year's successful 3Cs - the Callander Cycle Challenge – next year’s event will take place on Saturday 29th April 2017. It is hoped that the Rotary Club can build on the success of the first Challenge from which the cyclists raised just short of £30,000 for their charities. It is hoped that a sum in excess of £40,000 can be raised in 2017
President Nominee, Andrew Steven, informed members that the speaker programme is in place until the end of February. Andrew would be happy to receive suggestions, from members, for future speakers.
Both Club Secretary, Gordon Megahy, and Treasurer, David McLeod, gave short reports.
Immediate Past President, Jane Allan, reported on Santa’s Sleigh 2016:
ØProposed dates are, either 13th or 14th December, and, either 20th or 21st December
ØRoutes for both Motherwell and Wishaw have been identified
ØLearning from last year, the Sleigh will stop at specified points on the routes and these will be advertised in the local press and promoted by personal visits to the local primary schools and nurseries
On behalf of the International Committee, President James Gibbons confirmed that the Club has sent a cheque for a £1,000 to Rotary International to help with the recent disasters in Haiti.
Community and Vocational Convenor, Katrina Gibbons, advised members that:
ØThe Furniture for Families Autumn Fayre to be held in the Bentley Hotel on Sunday 6th November from 1pm to 4pm
ØThere will be stalls of Handmade Jewellery, Handmade Crafts, Handmade Greetings Cards, Cosmetics, Candles and Aloe Vera
ØThere will be a prize draw (with a star prize donated by Parks Skoda, Hamilton) and a tombola
ØTickets are £1.00, payable at the door, and this includes refreshment
Youth Convenor, Roy Simpson, reported that:
ØHe continues to work with the local High Schools to arrange our programme of schools visiting the Club
ØDalziel High will provide the entertainment for our Music Evening on 24th November
ØA new Interact Club has been set up in Coltness High School, Wishaw. Documentation has been forwarded to R.I.B.I. and the Interact Club’s Charter should be available for presentation, probably, in early January
Rotary Foundation Convenor, Willie Talbot, addressed the members on:
ØUpdates on both our ongoing Bonus Ball and Numbers Club projects
ØWe also received a report on End Polio Day, which was 24th October, the highlight of which was the confirmation that, as the result of Rotary’s End Polio Now, this disease has been eradicated in all but three countries, Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan
One of our Membership, Communication and Public Relations Convenors, John McDonald, reported that:
ØWe have introduced a mentoring programme for new members and this is being piloted, at the moment, with Peter McCrossan
ØIn line with the mentoring programme, a ‘Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw – Who’s Who and What Do They Do’ booklet has been prepared
ØThe committee with liaise with P.N. Andrew Steven to identify an evening where the speaker would enhance an Information Evening where members could invite potential new members to the club
Attendance Officer, Tom McPherson, reported that the average attendance for the past month has been 71.8%
Social Committee Convenor and Website Administrator, Bill McCallum, advised members:
ØThat a visit to the Rotary Club of Coatbridge, Airdrie and Monklands will be arranged for Monday, 21st November
ØSuggestions for the destination for the next Family Day Out were requested. This should be held in June 2017
ØMembers were given a demonstration of the club's updated website and encouraged to use it regularly to see what was happening with Rotary at a local, district and national level
