The speakers at tonight’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw were Liz Bogle and Chloe McDonald who are officers in the 5th Motherwell Girls’ Brigade Company attached to Dalziel St. Andrews Parish Church. Liz is the Captain of the Company and she told of her thirty plus year’s involvement, initially with the Girls’ Guildry, the forerunner of the Girls Brigade. She took the members through the system of badge work undertaken by the girls, and, as only one badge is completed each year, the number of badges on their armbands will tell you how long each girl has served in the Girls’ Brigade.
Liz then introduced Chloe McDonald who is the lieutenant in charge of the Explorer section within the company, having been a member of the Brigade for eighteen years. Chloe is, currently, working towards her Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award. In addition to her work with the Girls Brigade, Chloe is an enthusiastic volunteer at PHEW respite home in Motherwell. Chloe explained that PHEW (Positive Help Engaging Ways) provides short residential breaks for children and adults who experience severe to profound learning difficulties. She works in the centre, at least, one evening each week, spending time with each guest and performing the very important task of making the suppers!! It was clear from Chloe's presentation that she has a real passion for her voluntary work and, when given the opportunity, our members asked a number of questions.
In addition to our scheduled speaker, P.N. Andrew will go over the final arrangements for the Callander Cycle Challenge which takes place on Saturday, 30th April.
