Budapest Away Weekend.

A party of 24 Rotarians, partners and Inner Wheel members, enjoyed another excursion arranged by Michael Lloyd-Davies, from Saturday 23rd to Tuesday 26th April. A late flight from Bristol meant us arriving at the Hotel Zenit Palace, just in time to tumble into bed before midnight.

Next morning, after a splendid breakfast, there was a City Tour by a private bus with our excellent Tour Guide, Susanna. Despite the rain and overcast skies, she took us all over both sides of the Danube, with occasional hops off, and a very informative commentary. Own arrangements for lunch and a free afternoon, meant everyone was able to look around the Buda side, and walk or catch a Number 16 blue bus back to the Hotel (some to catch up with sleep!). Small group dinners for 8 were arranged in local restaurants in the evening.

Monday was drier but a cold wind blew and with nothing formal arranged, many made their way to the Grand Market, a huge building of brick and iron, with a variety of everyday produce, as well as Hungarian Specialities and Craftwork. The displays of meat and fish were enormous. The more mature members were able to travel free from there on public transport, so a ride to the end of Tram No 2 line, led to a pleasant small restaurant for a snack, and further glimpses of Street Art and bronze statues which crop up in the most unexpected places.

Our evening dining experience was on the Kossuth Restaurant boat. It was moored a couple of hundred yards from the Hotel, and reached by going aboard a Museum Paddle Boat. We cast off as the light was failing, enjoyed a sunset, then watched the buildings and bridges come to sparkling life as they were illuminated and we enjoyed a buffet meal as we sailed along the great Danube River.

Next morning, luggage packed and breakfast eaten, we boarded our coach to make our way up the left bank to the Danube Bend, and the attractions of Visegrad and Szentendre. Just time for lunch, then headed for the Airport where the flight was delayed by an hour due to electrical storms over England.

A smooth flight but a bumpy landing at Bristol, and travel home after another GREAT WEEKEND.
