Find out how the Samaritans operate

Why Samaritans?

We're carefully trained to put aside any personal beliefs. We won't give you a label, a diagnosis or a prescription.

And because you're talking to a stranger, you don't have to worry about our feelings.

We’re always here

We’re always open, round the clock, every single day of the year.

We're confidential

We want you to feel safe while talking to us, so you can tell us how you’re really feeling. That’s why we take your confidentiality very seriously

We support everyone

Our name is an historical accident.

When the Daily Mirror first found out about our service, they described us as “Good Samaritans”, and the name stuck.

You do not have to be religious in any way to volunteer or to get in touch – we talk to people of all faiths and of no faith.

Volunteers do not impose their own religious, political, philosophical beliefs on anyone who contacts us.
