Barge trip on Kennet And Avon Canal

It was a warm barmy evening when members of Melksham Rotary set off from moorings in Bradford On Avon, on board the Barbara Mclellan.  The boat is manned by volunteers who looked after us extreemly well on our trip.

We headed towards Trowbridge for our first hour and started a delicious supper provided by two of our members.  We turned around just before Trowbridge at Widbrook, in a space just slightly larger than the barge - to then head towards Bath.

Supper was finished by the time we got to the lock in Bradford On Avon, it was quite an experience going down to the canal below.  A pleasant 2 hours followed taking us to Dundas and back to our moorings via that lock again.

Our friends from Melksham Lions and Trowbridge Wessex Mead Rotary joined us for the evening and a good time was had by all.

President Sarah said " last year we celebrated 50 years of Melksham Rotary with a big Black tie event and various other activities, so this year we wanted to do something more low key and relaxing - this evening was perfect, everything we hoped it would be! "

During her welcome speech, President Sarah made reference to 3 wonderful people who are moving on from their roles for Melksham Rotary - Peter King PHF is retiring after many many years service, Peter had been a past president by was also key as our press and publicity officer.  Terry Bezeley will also leaving to spend more time volunteering in his home town of Devizes.  Terry is our current secretary but also a past president, and has been a valued volunteer in the ArtHouse cafe along with his wife Juliet - we hope they will continue in that role.  A huge thankyou went to Tessa Missen, our volunteer coordinator, who will be leaving that post at the end of the month, though she has promised to carry on as a volunteer.  Through Tessas hard work, including stepping into the breach when ever volunteers were unable to do their shift, the ArtHouse has raised over £70,000 for local charities.  Lastly Sarah thanked PE Verly Ives, for organising the evening.  Sarah will be handing over to Verly later in June.
