In 1977 Arthur Negus a favourite on the BBC’s Going for a Song programme started a new programme that was to become one of the nations favourite antiques programmes for the next 40 years. Angela Rippon was the first presenter when the programme was first aired. She remained the presenter for three years.
Clifford White was the floor manager who busied away in the background ensuring the programmes were recorded as planned. Clifford spoke to the Club on Tuesday 23rd August and held the members, partners and guests spell bound for forty minutes. He spoke of the way the programme had grown in popularity and from the initial 7 programmes per series it was now running at 26 programmes per series.
After Angela Rippon, came the well liked Hugh Scully, who presented the programme for 18 years. He was eventually replaced by former news reader Michael Aspel and he in turn was replaced by Fiona Bruce.
The programme moves around the country and has even been recorded across the world in Jamaica and Australia. At each recording between 2000 and 3000 people attend with their antique clutched safely in their hands.
Clifford retired some years ago but still meets up with old friends and members of the current crew. His talk was humorous and very informative and he was thanked by Rotarian Brian Knox-Little.
