President Alan Rankin, Andrew Burger-Seed, V.P. Stewart Wilson

Rotary Club of Stirling meeting of 7/10/16.

President Alan Rankin welcomed members and two guests, Andrew Burger-Seed, our speaker, and Adam Gaines from Prostate cancer Scotland.

President Alan reminded members of the presidents evening on Thursday the 17th November ,7 for 7.30 in the Albert Hall.

Our speaker, Andrew Burger-Seed has worked for Medecin Sans Frontier as a logician since 2013 serving in South Sudan, Sierra Leone and Papua New Guinea. He is currently waiting for a visa for Pakistan, where he will act as a project manager in the East of the country.  Medecin Sans Frontier was founded in France in 1971, and now operates worldwide "in places where others are not going".  It's three basic principles are, neutrality, impartiality, and independence, and to this end it is funded exclusively by individuals, never by governments. In 2015 they raised £44 million, spending only 4% of this on administration.

They operate in four main areas, war and conflict, epidemics, disasters, and with those excluded from essential health care. MSF is best known for care of the sick, but this has to be supported by logistical planning, water supply, sanitation, buildings and power supply. They will also speak out, bear witness, when this is appropriate and helpful.

This is often an area where difficult judgements have to be made.

Working in 60 countries at present, 25,000 of their workers are local and about

5000 international. Among many activities, in the past year they provided 8.5 million consultations, 1.5 million vaccinations, and treated 2.5 million suffers from Malaria.

The vote of thanks was given by Ian Richardson who wished Andy well in his posting to Pakistan.

President Alan was pleased to present our cheque for £1500 raised at Gardening Scotland, to Adam Gaines from Prostate cancer Scotland.

The District governor will be at our meeting on 14th September when we will celebrate the 90th anniversary of the founding of our club.
