"Our efforts towards the people of Syria have become even more urgent and necessary. Shelterboxes are badly needed for people whose homes are being turned into rubble.

The escalation of the Syrian war in Aleppo is having terrible consequences. Two million residents have already fled while the remaining 300,000 trapped there are being bombed mercilessly. Each day 20 to 30 bombs are dropped causing about the same number of deaths. Since there is no safe humanitarian corridor civilians have little choice but to stay. Those who attempt to leave face the sniper's bullet. If they survive they would have the choice of turning one way into the arms of ISIL or the other to cross the border. If the present circumstances continue to prevail food and provisions are expected to run out within a few weeks.

Please make your donation now and if you can, join us on 26th September for the Auction at St John's College."

5 Jul 2016 Mike Petty was our guest speaking about the Cambridge Collection, the result of many years work by him. On being advised of our Grand Auction on 26th September he informed us that this would be in keeping with the Cambridge tradition of welcoming refugees. In the early 20th century it had been Belgians and Serbs, and in the inter war years, Jews and others fleeing Nazi oppression. Now it is the turn of
Syrians who need our help. (Club Meeting)

Sam Hewett of Shelterbox has recently been to northern Syria. He says that the war
in the Aleppo area has worsened very seriously. Tens of thousands have fled and
are now homeless, unprotected and without food.

From the Times of 16 June: “Penniless child migrants are being pushed into
prostitution to raise the cash to pay an entry fee into camps in Northern
France...youngsters are being charged about £400 …...a report says that sexual
violence is a constant threat.”

Rory Fox a noted 'superhead' and father of five in Cambridge left his job in favour of
setting up a school last October in the Dunkirk refugee camp. He says that on most
days one of his pupils will disappear, 'who knows where'. He comments that the
children are bright and very keen to learn. They queue early each morning at the
shack where he and his volunteer teachers gather. Many of the students want to be
doctors. They are well capable of the studies though he doubts whether such a future
is possible for them.

Jo Cox MP was murdered very recently - from The Independent of 16 June:
She called repeatedly for Britain to do more to help the victims of Syria’s civil war.
She knew what she was talking about: she was still in regular contact with friends
and former colleagues in the aid world working to help refugees in the region.
She set up a parliamentary group on Syria and staged Commons debates on the
plight of the refugees. She argued forcefully that the UK Government should be doing
more both to help the victims and use its influence abroad to bring an end to the
Syrian conflict.

13 June 2016 The situation is now much worse. Many families have no home, no money, no food. 45,000 people have fled in the last three weeks
