On Saturday 18th June the sun shone and the crowds gathered in Brora to watch the annual Rotary Duck Race.  2,000 highly trained ducklings had spent weeks getting into peak condition and were match fit.  The local medics had screened them - even the Russian entries had proved to be drug free - although it was rumoured that some dope was seen betting on the outcome!  This was probably the closest race in the events 10 year history with over 100 ducks still in with a chance of victory just yards from the finishing line.  However it was duckling number 1032, wearing the colours of Ann McLeod from the Golspie High School Library, which just got its beak in front to win the £200 first prize.  Other winners were from Aberdeen, Skye, Thurso, Brora and Lairg.  As a result of a stunning day on the river - great weather, super crowds, the East Sutherland Canoe Clubs demonstration, the Sutherland Schools Mini Pipe Band, The Ducklings from the Rankin Dance and Theatre Group and a magic BBQ at the harbour almost £2,000 was raised for local community projects.  Once again the generosity of the Sutherland public was incredible - Thank You.
