The Syrian disaster

Since March 2011 over 12 million people have been displaced. Of these 4 million have fled to neighbouring countries. A third are children. Three quarters are women or children. There are at least 10,000 unaccompanied children in Europe, many are reported by Interpol to be suffering various forms of abuse including slavery.

Shelterbox

ShelterBox is a charity currently delivering aid to devastated Syrian families in order to give them safe shelter and the tools to rebuild homes and communities.

ShelterBox is supported by a global network of partners, including Rotary International.

HRH The Duchess of Cornwall is ShelterBox’s President and Royal Patron.

Aid is delivered by any means possible, by air, foot, boat, helicopter or even tuk-tuk.

ShelterBox in Syria

Since 2012 Shelterbox has delivered aid worth $5m to more than 8,400 families in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq Kurdistan and Greece. Through its partner agency Hand in Hand for Syria, it is sending its ShelterBoxes and kits to the devastated Aleppo area where there are signs of cholera.

What does ShelterBox provide?

Shelterbox aid to Syrian families is specifically tailored to their needs.

  • Items are specially sourced and designed to ensure that the families have exactly the aid required. They are designed to withstand extreme conditions, from torrential rain to hurricane winds, and to last for a long time.
  • The sturdy green ShelterBoxes contain family-sized tents and ShelterKits designed to withstand the elements and provide people with temporary shelter.
  • They contain all of the essential tools people need to start repairing and rebuilding homes straight away.
  • The kits and boxes also contain the items that help transform shelter into a home - like cooking sets, solar lights and activity sets for children.
  • There are also extra aid items, such as SchoolBoxes that contain everything needed to get lessons up and running after a disaster, depending on the situation.

In addition to providing tools and tents the ShelterBox response teams are the connection between the supporters and people devastated by the Syrian disaster - ordinary families helping other families thrown into extraordinary circumstances

Cambridge Refugee Resettlement Campaign (CRRC)

The CRRC is a group of volunteers based in Cambridge working to welcome, support and build the capacity of Syrian refugees arriving to the City through the Government resettlement campaign.

It does this by supplementing the City Council provision of support to refugees through:
  • the provision of specialist English classes
  • employment, entrepreneurial guidance and opportunities e.g. for job training
  • interpreters around the clock
  • guidance on fostering refugee children
  • cultural and social experiences e.g. regular meetings of families with volunteers
  • donation of household goods
  • advice and counsel on British systems and customs
  • raising awareness in support of helping refugees - especially in schools

The CRSC operates entirely through volunteer resources, employing funds raised through benefit events organised by its committee and other supporters.

Donations

Donation may be sent by cheque to Rotary Club of Cambridge at the following address: rcambridgesyria@gmail.com

A receipt will be sent to you by email or post according to your preference. A facility for on-line donations will also become available. This will be publicised widely, on this website and in the local and social media including Cambridge News and Cambridgeshire Radio.
