Origins of the office of Lord Lieutenant

Rotary club of Stirling meeting of 6/1/2017.

Senior vice president Stewart Wilson welcomed members to the first meeting of the new year. Stewart intimated the death of Alex Scott, Paul Harris fellow and club member for 39 years. This year's Thistle centre collection was in aid of Castleview school restoring our connection with what was previously Kildean school.

Past President Phillip Allison, who has been one of 15 local deputy Lord Lieutenants since 2008, spoke about the origins of the office of Lord Lieutenant. Established in England by Henry the eighth in 1540, to take over the military functions of the Sheriffs, the holders were usually nobles, and are still styled Lord Lieutenant today. The first Scottish appointment was in Fife in 1688, and by 1794 all areas of Scotland were covered. Originally a military appointment, in 1871 the Lord Lieutenant's power over the military was removed but the office continues. It remains a crown appointment. Lord Lieutenants are appointed for life, or until age 75, the post is non-political, and includes formal duties, acting on behalf of the Queen, when required and keeping her informed of significant local events. The Lord Lieutenant or one of her deputies is responsible for organising Royal visits, suggesting possible recipients of honours, and making contact with local civic and voluntary groups. Each Lord Lieutenant is responsible for an area roughly equivalent to the old Scottish counties.

The vote of thanks was given by Martin Ross.   Our meeting on 13th
January will be a business meeting. Visitor's host Crawford Gordon.  For further info. www.stirling.rotary1010.org
