Brian Cox - Yes Minister.
On Thursday 30th. March we had an evening meeting for a change and our speaker was Brian Cox, a civil servant who worked with many well known government officials and ministers during his long career.
Brian was educated at East Ham Grammar School and he poked fun at himself for not quite managing to lose his 'East End' accent.
He likened his career to the Yes Minister TV series and as he stated several times the stories that he told us relating to his many political masters could have come straight off the pages of the scripts from the series.
All in all it was a most enjoyable evening covering topic such as finance, defence, the treasury, the cabinet , Black Wednesday, the peace agreement, Miss Whiplash, 'round objects' and many more. His tales of incompetence, successes, failures and mishaps within government had the larger than normal gathering of Rotarians, wives and friends laughing in appreciation of his depiction of the activities and actions some of these well known characters. Underlining it all though was his devotion to the job and his political neutrality as he worked and supported politicians with opposing political views. As in all jobs there were characters that he did not particularly admire or in some cases like and some that he could not praise highly enough.
Many Thanks to Brian for spending time with us and I hope we can hear more from him some time in the future.
George Larkey
