5th Annual Wheelchair Challenge

Background

The annual Wheelchair Legacy Challenge is the brainchild of London 2012 Bedford Training Camp manager, Howard Darbon.  With almost 200 Paralympic athletes and officials based in Bedford for their pre-Games training, it was evident how much sport assisted the personal development and confidence of the athletes.  As ‘legacy’ featured highly in the successful London bid, the concept of the Challenge was born.  Since the inaugural event in October 2012, over £22,000 has been raised to support the development of sport for disabled people.  With the organisation and enthusiastic support from local Rotary Clubs, many of whose members were active volunteers during London 2012, the event has gone from strength to strength

The Event

The Wheelchair Challenge event will take place on Sunday 9th October at the International Athletic Stadium in Barkers Lane, Bedford. MK41 9SB.

Lightweight sports wheelchairs are provided by WheelPower.

Relay races are divided into age categories and are made up of four people each completing a timed 50 metre length of the track.

An individual 400 metre race has proved very popular in the past and is open to all ages.

Finally races for the fastest in each group take place.

Registration opens at 10.00am with the first race at 10.30am.

There is an entry fee for the races and competitors are encouraged to raise sponsorship in aid of the beneficiaries.
