PLANTING BULBS FOR POLIO

PLANTING BULBS FOR POLIO ERADICATION

Each year across the world thousands of primary school pupils planted purple crocus bulbs, part of a project by Rotary International.  The Grow Your Own Crocus idea was launched to help educate all children about Polio and its life changing effects on those infected.

The purple crocus symbolises the colored dye painted on the little finger of children to show they have been immunised.

The campaign, launched jointly by Rotary International and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will match funds raised to a total of US$o35 million per year until 2018.

The Mayor of Oldham Metropolitan Borough, Councilor Derek Heffron, Club President Neil Taylor and Past President Ray Coverley P H F, joined some of the pupils of Richmond Academy to plant the first of 500 bulbs in the new school garden.
