Guadalmina Rotary visit

Guadalmina Rotary visit

story & photos (below) from Mrs Pat Haines

On Thursday 17th. November, Brian Piccolo, Jim and Pat Haines, joined our Rotarian friends from the MARBELLA- GUADALMINA Club, at the Restaurant El Cortijo de Ramiro, in San Pedro, which is close to the town of Marbella. It is an English speaking , multi- national Club with 40 members, representing at least 12 different Nationalities. On its’ website, one of its’ taglines  is ‘’ He profits most who serves best’’ the famous Paul Harris Mantra. It was a most beautiful day, the Temperature reaching 70* at one time in the afternoon!! No complaints there!! Below is a photo of us three with Anders, acting President.

The speaker was Jess Shaw Roberts, a midwife, who alongside The G-M Club, supports a Project in Uganda, named the NABUGABO Project. Uganda is amongst the poorest countries in the world. Most people live on less than one euro a day, with 40% of the population suffering from malnutrition. Less than 20% of the children that attend Primary School go onto Secondary Education.

Below Anders presenting Jess with her after presentation vino!!

The Project is based in MASAKA in Southern Uganda, and is an Educational Charity, named KINDRED, which supports a Community based  Learning Centre. This gives children of Primary age, access to good quality Education. In 2012, Masaka was at the epicentre of the AIDS Pandemic in Uganda and 25% of the children are AIDS orphans or HIV positive.

It was founded by  Dave Batter and Judy Harris, and has grown from 30 children to 112, at present.

The Rotary group of M-G, Sponsor 10 of these children, for 5 years, on a rolling Programme.

The Charity also supports the wider Family Network and provides Uniforms and shoes to the children, which are treasured highly.

Children that live more than 7 kms away are given a Bicycle to assist their journey.

The school also gives the children 2 Meals a day, as these are children from extremely poor Families.

Jess showed us a wonderful Video of one of her visits to the Project, a very heartening and uplifting addition to the Talk, showing exactly what was being achieved.

In the words of Mahatma Ghandi, also posted on the M-G website, ‘’ Be the change you want to see in the World.’’

Anders, the Acting President of the Club, and all the Members of the Club, made us most welcome, as ever, and a very happy time was had by all, it would seem.

Yours in Friendship. Pat Haines. x
