Carlisle Youth Zone

Funding of new minibus following floods

Press Release

On Wednesday, 30th November 2016, Rotarians from the 4 Rotary Clubs based in the Carlisle area, met at Carlisle Youth Zone to hand over the keys of a brand new minibus to Chris Holmes, Chairman of CYZ.  The local Rotarians, supported by colleagues from across Great Britain and Ireland who gave generously to our flood appeal, have been pleased to be able to help with making sure that the Youth Zone continued to provide the much-needed support for young people across the city.  We provided substantial revenue funding to allow for continuity of service and contributed to the provision of the new Minibus.

Each of the 4 local Clubs (Brampton & Longtown, Carlisle, Carlisle South and Carlisle Castle) have also supported many individual flood related requests in the last 12 months including;

  • Provision of dehumidifiers, heaters and fans allocated and used under the guidance of the Flood Recovery centre
  • The Katie & the Flood Book published by Joellen Publications
  • Several local Nursery’s and sensory equipment for a young boy to replace that lost in the floods
  • Crosby on Eden and Downagate village halls, Botcherby Community Association and St Aidan’s Church
  • A trip to the Panto in Newcastle for affected youngsters last January
  • Funding to help the Royal Marines cooking demonstrations to flood hit youngsters

Almost £38,000 has been made available through Rotary in the area.

In addition, we have continued to support the Flood Advice Centre, although more volunteers are always welcomed to support us in this type of work.  If anyone wishes to find out more about how they could help us then please do contact one of the local clubs.

Arthur Jones for Carnforth, who was the District Governor for Cumbria & Lancashire when storm Desmond hit last year, says “I was bowled over by the response we had to our Flood Fund with over £200,000 being donated from clubs across Great Britain and Ireland.  We have now distributed or committed most of the funds.  I was pleased to be able to support the Clubs in Carlisle and particularly their request to support the Youth Zone.  Young people are at the heart of what Rotary does in our communities and we will always support them in whatever way we can”.
