Jeannie visits Uganda
The speaker on our first meeting of 2017 was Jeannie Urquhart from Brora who gave a very well presented and interesting talk on her visit to Uganda with International Citizen Service. This is a development programme that brings together young people from the UK and developing countries to volunteer in some of the poorest communities in Africa, Asia and Latin America. After training in the UK and fundraising for the programme, Jeannie spent 12 weeks in Uganda working with local entrepreneurs to launch exciting businesses that create jobs and improve lives. Everyone found the talk informative and recognises what a good investment it is to help young people like Jeanie experience such charity work and develop their personalities and skills. Jeannie’s thoughts on her visit are below.
‘The three months that I spent in Uganda have been the most amazing three months of my life. I experienced a completely different culture, living, eating and sleeping in the same conditions that many Ugandans are living in right now.
I saw some of the most amazing scenery, climbed mountains, saw waterfalls, went along the Nile River and visited the Equator on the Lake Victoria.
The purpose of the 12 weeks volunteering was to help young talented entrepreneurs learn about business and finance by improving their business and in turn improve their livelihood and their future. Huge thanks to friends, family and the people of East Sutherland who have donated and helped me to go on this amazing experience. Also, thank you to East Sutherland Rotary and Brora Community Council for their very generous donations.’
