Hector takes Champion of Champions Bothy Ballads

.

Once again a sell-out crowd attended the 35th Bothy Ballads Champion of Champions, held at Elgin Town Hall on Saturday evening, and sponsored by The Macallan.

The competitors this year were defending champion Shona Donaldson, John Dickson, Bill Gray, Hector Riddell, Moira Stewart  and Allan Taylor who all qualified through their success at regional contests over the course of the year.

Our compere for the evening was Raymond Wood from Lossiemouth who is very well known locally, and our judges this year were Professor Ian Russell from Elphinstone Institute and  Frieda Morrison – Singer, Songwriter and Broadcaster

Entertainment was provided during the evening by Robyn Stapleton – BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year, with accompanist Innes White

After a close fought completion the Macallan Porridge Bowl and Spoon were presented to Hector Riddell with Allan Taylor taking 2nd place and Shona Donaldson 3rd.

This was the 4th year the winner was also presented the Donald Ferguson Medal, in memory of Donald, a past Elgin Rotarian, who has sadly passed away, but was a great supporter of the competition over many years.

A painting donated by local artist Graeme Nairn was auctioned on the night and reached a fantastic bid of £430.
