Speaker Report - Rtn Michael Adigun

A brief history of Rtn Michael Adigun's career.

16 FEBRUARY 2017 THIS IS MY LIFE – MICHAEL ADIGUN

Michael, a new member of our club, gave us a talk on his life and career. His parents brought him to England from Lagos in Nigeria when he was four and they lived in south London. After taking his degree he decided to work in mental health and from 1975 for three years trained to be a psychiatric nurse in Epsom hospital. For a while afterwards he travelled around Europe and, almost for a dare, tried his hand at male fashion modelling. Judging by a demonstration on the evening he must have been quite successful!

By 1982 he had returned to psychiatry as a clinical specialist at the Maudsley hospital, the premier psychiatric hospital in the country, and in 1985 found himself in Wexham as a Community Psychiatric Nurse, where he set up a re-habilitation unit in Britwell. He subsequently moved into the education side of mental health at Reading University' setting up training courses for psychiatric nursing and higher education before becoming an Assistant Registrar at the University, in particular dealing with mitigation cases (plagiarism, late submission of work etc.). Michael retired in 2012.

Michael’s wife was a senior psychiatric nurse at the Maudsley hospital, where they met, and they have two children - Susan, who has a degree on History and is now a nurse – and Peter who works in IT for the MOD. His hobby is gardening.
