The Speaker was Mike Bullock the Chief Executive of The Northern Lighthouse Board. He was appointed to this position on the 29th April 2014.
Mike spent 34 years in the Royal Navy in both surface and submarine vessels and on his retirement was a Commodore of the Royal Navy.
The Scottish NL Board is based in George Street Edinburgh and if you look up to the window you will see a model of a Lighthouse there.
Mike gave us a very interesting talk and I am sure that like me, many of us were not aware of all that the NLB is involved in. Edinburgh covers Scotland and the Isle of Man and has 26 Lighthouses of various sizes. In addition to the lighthouses there are numerous GPS stations which advise mariners of their position but there is always a possibility that the stations can be interfered with.
The main objective of the Board is to keep sea lanes open and safe. Foghorns have been discontinued due to the installation of the GPS.
Edinburgh is the HQ and has 83 staff, Oban has 20, Inverness 2, Kirkwall 3. They have two ships both based in Oban and occasionally, when required, rent a helicopter. The NL is funded by the Light Dues received from ships and is therefore not a burden on the public purse.
This was a very interesting talk and Mike responded effectively to numerous questions.
