St Michael's Way Challenge 2017

History

St Michael's Way is a 12.5 mile coast to coast walk between Lelant, and St Michael's Mount.

Due to its historical significance St Michael's Way is the only footpath in Britain that is part of a designated European Cultural Route.

The historical significance of St Michael's Way lies in the fact that it is part of a network of pilgrim routes that lead to St James' Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain, one of the three most important sites of Christian pilgrimage in the world.

The route is believed to date back to pre-historic times (10000 BC to 410 AD), and is thought to have been used by pilgrims and missionaries who arrived from Ireland or Wales and chose to abandon their ships and walk across the peninsula from Lelant to Marazion, rather than navigating the treacherous waters around Land's End.

The walk is considered to be of moderate to strenuous difficulty. Some of the paths are very steep and narrow. As well as being muddy, particularly after very wet weather. There are some steep climbs - but the views are spectacular (Knill’s Steeple) on a clear day you can see beyond St Ives Bay and as far as Trevose Head and the largest sand dunes in Cornwall at Gwithian.

There are far-reaching views of West Penwith at Trencrom Hill. The summit is slightly off the official path but is a breathtaking short detour. Trencrom Hill at 550ft is one of the finest viewpoints in Cornwall. You will encounter gorse, brambles and cows along the way.

Not only is this a spectacularly beautiful walk, but you will also be raising money for two important charities: Children’s Hospice South West and Rotary projects (helping less fortunate people all over the world).
