Rotary Technology Tournament March 2018
Task to build a Space capsule Launcher
Basingstoke Joins the Space Race!
Last Thursday, 97 students from 9 local schools and colleges competed in a “Space Race" to build a Space Capsule Launcher!
The STEM accredited initiative is hosted annually at Basingstoke College of Technology (BCOT), Hampshire’s very own centre of excellence for technology. The event is organised by Basingstoke Loddon Rotary and supported by other local Rotary clubs.
During the competition the race was on to see which teams would win this year’s trophies. Tension grew during the vertical launches as some space capsules soared up to the ceiling, whilst others, just like some real space rocket tests, failed to take off, crashed or dropped back before reaching the desired height. Everyone enjoyed the day and after some deliberation the judges selected the winning teams.
There are three age categories in the competition:
Foundation: Key stage 3 - ages 11 – 14 won by The Clere School
Intermediate: Key stage 4 – ages 15 – 16 won by The Vyne School
Advanced: Key stage 5 – ages 17 – 19 won by Queen Mary’s College
Winners awards were presented by the Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane, Cllr Paul Frankum.
As an added bonus, students from the Foundation and Intermediate groups who participated may apply for the British Science Association’s CREST Discovery Award.
BM Injection, a high-tech engineering company from Whitchurch, is generously sponsoring the Discovery Award Fee for each participating student.
