Visit by District Governor Michael Longdon
Mon 14th August 2017 at 18.45 - 20.30
Our visitor this week was this year's District Governor Michael Longdon. Michael oversees the 80-ish Rotary clubs in our area.
Michael brought us greetings from the head of Rotary in GB and Ireland, Denis Spiller, and from Rotary International President, Ian Riseley.
Ian's theme for his presidential year is "Rotary: Making a Differenence". Michael reminded us that, although the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the World Health Organisation get all the publicity, Rotary's PolioPlus campaign has been the driving force that has almost seen polio eradicated worldwide, with Rotarians providing not only funding but organisation and manpower to ensure the vaccines are delivered effectively.
Michael congratulated us on our own efforts in Making a Difference both internationally (by supporting PolioPlus and funding ShelterBoxes and AquaBoxes for areas hit by natural disasters), and in our own community through our Young Musician Competition, Young Enterprise, and the support we provide to various local charities.
Michael concluded by encouraging us, of course, to keep on Making a Difference.
