Inner Wheel - International Evening

Mon, Apr 10th 2017 at 7:00 pm - 9:45 pm

Members of the Rotary Club have been invited to attend the International Evening of the Inner Wheel Club of Motherwell and Wishaw where the speaker will be Margaret Curness of the Purple Community Fund

Nine members of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw joined the Inner Wheel Club of Motherwell and Wishaw, at the Moorings House Hotel for their International Evening.

After an excellent meal, we were addressed by Margaret Curness on the work of the Purple Community Fund in the Philippines and, more recently, the UK.

In 1996, disillusioned with her with her career in the newspaper industry, Jane Walker headed over to the Philippines for a rethink about her future. What was supposed to be a short break ended up being the start of a brand new life.

Jane heard of the horrendous conditions in which families were living and working on rubbish dumps in Manila, and on arrival asked a taxi driver to take her to the worst slum areas he knew – so she could see for herself. It was the most pivotal moment of her life and the start of a 20-year crusade to try and help break the cycle of poverty through education, welfare and livelihood programs. After building the world’s first school out of recycled shipping containers and transforming the lives of thousands of families, the charity is without question, a remarkable success.

Wanting to bring that success back home to the UK, and realising that the charity in the Philippines – now known as The Purple Centers Foundation – was closer to sustainability, Jane changed the charities name from the Philippine Community Fund to the Purple Community Fund. With the main focus being on social enterprise and wellbeing programmes, PCF continues to bring education, work and qualifications to those in the Philippines and now also to those most in need here in the UK.

The main fund-raising effort in the U.K. comes from selling items made in U.K. prisons. Ring pulls from cans of drink are transformed into stunning handbags, clothing and accessories. Recycled materials, such as polyurethane, curtains, tents, t-shirts, PVC, foil laminates, glossy magazines, material, suede and leather are upcycled into a host of products including rain hats, ponchos, shoe bags and bags for life. The pages of magazines are rolled into beads and made into beautiful necklaces, bracelets and earrings. Examples of their amazing products were available for purchase.

A raffle was held on the evening and the proceeds from this, together with the monies raised at the Inner Wheel’s International fund-raising evening, allowed the ladies to present Ms Curness with a cheque for almost £600 towards the work of the charity.

A most interesting evening.
