The YEDT competition, held at the Discovery Museum in July, is organised by Hexham Rotary Club with generous sponsorship by Friends of the Museum and the NUSTEM initiative, Northumbria University. The aim is to encourage students at school to take up an engineering or design career.

The competition is to be held again in 2017 on 6 July at the Discovery Museum, with continued focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines.

There are three classes of entries: A-level, GCSE, 11-13.

For the A-level and GCSE students, the competition is based around a student's existing examination work in engineering, design or technology and associated portfolio in any discipline, which means that there is no additional work needed on the part of the student apart from turning up on the day. It will be expected that projects have been created to a development standard which can be demonstrated to the judges.

Any GCSE or A-level design or technology examination project can be entered. Prizes are awarded to individual students, teams and to schools.

For the students aged 11-13, STEM clubs are to be used as the basis for recruitment with entries as the work done in classes. A maximum of five students per club would be allowed to attend on the day of exhibition. A brief description and photograph is required by 23 June in the case that we need to make a selection.

Teams of judges will be assembled, comprising a mixture of engineers, designers and experienced assessors. Each entry will be visited by a team of judges, who will ask questions of the student and assign a preliminary mark. The leaders of each judging team will participate in a moderation process to decide and confirm the overall winners in each class, after a re-visit of the individual entries.

Students can participate in the The Discovery Museum Trail after their projects have been assessed. They should also assist in the peer review of other students' entries; the project voted best by other students will receive the Friends of Discovery Museum prize.

Lunch vouchers, pre-paid by Rotary, will be available to all students, teachers and judges, for use in the Discovery Museum Cafe.

The prize-giving ceremony will be the final business on 6th July. Prizes are awarded to individual students and to schools:

  • A Level/GCSE School first prize £250.00

  • A Level/GCSE School second prize £150.00

  • School Stem Club (11–13) £150.00

  • Student A Level first prize £100.00

  • Student A Level second prize £50.00

  • GCSE Student first prize £100.00

  • GCSE Student second prize £50.00

  • Rotary Shield prizewinner £50.00

  • Friends of Discovery Museum prizewinner £50.00

The School prizes are awarded to the team with the four best overall entries in a class. There will be certificates for all prize winners and participants.
