Gary W Shaeffer

Recognition of outstanding service to the Club and to charitable causes

Gary was inducted into the Rotary Club of Northampton in 1993 and served as club secretary for a number of years. His administration skills and depth of thought in this role soon won him the thanks and admiration of fellow members.

When the Club’s satellite group was formed Gary, who was still working full time at that stage, became a leading light and organised a number of social and fundraising activities for our club including two very successful evenings “going to the dogs” at Towcester race course. Gary has also been very active in his support for overseas visits with our twinned clubs.

As well as his Rotary duties, Gary is a model of community involvement and social responsibility. In the town and county he is still very active in MacMillan Cancer Support and the British Red Cross Society and he rarely misses a Sunday morning at Cynthia Spencer Hospice giving practical support to the patients. For many years he has been a “blue badge” guide in Northampton.

More locally still, he has been a church warden at St Mary’s Church Great Brington and remains a member of the Church Council. In 2009 he took the initiative and led a team raising funds for the installation of kitchen, vestry and lavatory facilities at the Church. He remains a lay assistant in the Spencer Benefice often taking Sunday services. He is a committee member of The Friends of St. Mary’s and is the organisational genius behind the annual Safari Supper and Village Open Gardens both of which fully involve the community
and whilst providing fellowship, are helpful in raising funds to assist in the running and maintenance of the Church.

All in all, Gary devotes his life to helping others whether through his Rotary Membership or via his activities in the wider community

Donald Loe

Recognition of outstanding service to the Club and to charitable causes

Donald joined Rotary in June 1989 and quickly became Chairman of the Fundraising Committee in 2002.He was Club President in 2006/07 and in that year the RYLA candidates had an international flavour with young women from Pirmasens, Aalburg, Kiev and one locally from Bugbrooke.

As President he worked with the other Rotary Clubs to coordinate efforts and support each other by arranging monthly meetings. He had a busy and successful year. He and Lizzie have developed a strong linking relationship with members of Pirmasens and taken part in many family and youth exchange visits.

He has supported St Peter and St Paul's Church, Abington, Northampton over the last 46 years. He has been Church warden on many occasions as well as overseeing the maintenance and conservation of the church infrastructure. He has contributed to all aspects of his church’s activities encouraging youth and community inclusion, and continues to help with with all events.  He is a trustee of St Christopher’s Care Home a charity serving the local community and is overseeing building works developing a new medical centre.

He has worked hard supporting the Geoff and Dinannah Charitable Trust and raising funds through our Club for their water projects in Bungoma, Kenya.

Another dedicated Rotarian who actively continues to serve our Club, the community and charities.

David George

For continued and sustained service to our Club, District 1070, Rotary GB&I, Education and the Environment - a Paul Harris Sapphire is awarded.

David has continued to work as District 1070 Environmental Officer and has supported the planting of nearly 3,000 trees in our District on 2017-18 which will have a lasting benefit to the planet. He worked with the Woodland Trust to enable access to their support and provision of young trees to Clubs including our 110 planted at Hunsbury Heights

He was invited to speak at the District Conference in Llandudno on the Environment and was very pleased to be asked to attend the World Conference on Environmental Sustainability and Peace, as representative of District 1070 and Rotary GB&I, held in Vancouver in February 2018.

He continues his vision to make education a fun and enjoyable activity for young minds and speaks regularly in local primary school assemblies, which is much appreciated by both children and teachers.

He is a particularly able Almoner and ensures close contact is maintained with members who are unable to attend meetings due to illness. Although he is officially not speaker finder now he continues to identify interesting speakers for lunch time and international events.

He is a Past President and is an existing PHF award holder. Superb speaker finder for many years.

Long Service Awards

Jackie also presented 50 and 40-year Service Awards to 6 Rotarians (see photo above) who, between them, have ammassed well over 260 years of service to Rotary and the community.
