President Stewart Wilson and 1010 District Governor Graeme Archibald

Stirling Rotary meeting 15th. September 2017

President Stewart Wilson welcomed members, as well as District Governor Graeme Archibald and his wife Carol. Next week will see a Business Meeting i.e there will be no speaker.   Our Christmas collection for good causes will take place in the Thistle Marches on December 23rd., a departure from our usual slot between Christmas and New Year.  This should mean more shoppers, who might be happy to donate.  Auchterarder and district club will be holding their Young Musician of the Year event at Auchterarder Parish Church on November 11th,  7pm.  Having won the recent golf match at Shotts, the President is likely to see his handicap reduced next year, to give everyone else a chance.  Finally, President Stewart confirmed that we are hoping to hold a collection in the Thistle for the victims of hurricane Irma.  This will be during w/c 18th. September, date to be determined.

Speaker for the day was District Governor Graeme Archibald, who has already visited 37 clubs this year.   Graeme hails from the Elgin Club, to whose president we offered our best wishes.  The DG highlighted the need for more members, in particular from the younger generation.  He was pleased to note that the Stirling club had a solid group of female members, which must be crucial for the future.  Total head count throughout the district is 2500, male and female, whereas, 5 years ago, it was 3000.

Public Relations is vital, as a club can be doing good work but hardly anyone knows about it. Also, on the wider scale, End Polio Now has been hugely supported by Rotary International, not just governments and the Gates Foundation and we have to let people know this vital fact.  Incidentally, the world recently went 4 months without a new polio case, until 3 occurred in Afghanistan.  We have to go 36 consecutive months before we can count polio as defeated. Finally, the DG said that we need to open our arms to change without losing sight of our principles and always remember that finance is important but it isn’t everything.

The Vote of Thanks was given by John Rankin, in his inimitable poetic style.  The Visitors Host this week is Alan Rankin.  Anyone interested in finding out more about Stirling Rotary can visit the club website at www.stirling.rotary1010.org.
