The Rev. Dr. Robert Stirling was born in 1790 in Perth. Having studied divinity at the Universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow he became a minister in Kilmarnock (Laigh Kirk) and subsequently at Galston Parish Church where he died in 1878.
He inherited a real interest in engineering and invention from his father and grandfather. His inventions include a heat generator and an engine - the Stirling Cycle - the true worth of which are only now being realised in heat exchangers.
He was inducted into the Scottish Engineering Hall of Fame in 2014.
A quite remarkable man is our speaker, Willie Kidd as he illustrates his talk with the working scale models he has made.
