Visit to Piel Island

Wed, Aug 2nd 2017 at 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Our annual pilgrimage - will we have a new member to induct in the Castle ???? - regretably, NO we did not have a new member to induct in the castle ruins, but better luck next time !!!

After a dreadful day of heavy rain showers, we thought our trip was well and truely scupperred, however, the winds lightened and the sun actually came out (ok it was brief) but very welcome and we did have two ferry loads of our club visiting the island and enjoyed fantastic fare at the Ship courtesy of the King of Piel (cooking for us) and the Queen of Piel serving us from an excellent selection of drinks, including a King of Piel real ale which several of us tried. Then it was to look over the board describing all of the mouth watering offerrings of the day - I chose gammon and was stupified by the enormous steak which arrived topped by an island laid egg and then was tempted to go for the wild berry Eaton Mess after seeing Frank R and Peter G devour  one each, that started the ball rolling and several others also partook of the creamy concoction.

All too soon our Ferryman called (after a successful stint at fishing for mackerel) and it was time to all clamber back on board to race back to Roa island before the black sky shooting up from the south descended in another rain storm.

OK - we were not outdoors quite as much, except for the smokers, but still again had a super visit and thanks to the King and Queen came back to the mainland completely stuffed - all with excellent food and those not driving with some equally excellent ale.
