At Oake Manor, where 34 members, 19 guests and 2 visiting Rotarians from Kloof, South Africa (Tony Tucker and wife June), enjoyed an excellent meal before the speaker began.
President Colin welcomed everyone, and commented on the recent Golf Day, where £6.5K was raised by great team work and the efforts of Club Members, not forgetting the Wives of Rotarians who provided bacon sandwiches at the Halfway House.
Tony Blackshawe introduced our speaker, Dave Trotter, ex Avon & Somerset C.I.D., now a Designated Investigating Officer. Dave said that his duty was to help people stay safe. The Cheque Squad was now phased out and cyber crime takes its place.
ActionFraud.police.uk is now the place to go on a website to see where to report an incident, and there it will be routed to people like Dave who will investigate. He recommended that a Credit card [rather than a Debit] be used to pay for goods at a trader, as this was less likely to lead to account details being stolen, if the card was “skimmed”. Watch out for false fronts on ATMs {Cash dispensers}, especially at Supermarkets. Beware Courier Fraud, Investment Fraud, Mandate Fraud –Stay Safe.
During questions, it was obvious that several persons present had been the victims of similar crimes, but Dave’s talk was a wake up call to the rest. Stuart Adam led the vote of thanks.
Ball Draw went to David Brown, but still no joker.
