Rhonda McCrimmon spoke to the St Andrews Rotary Club about the work BID St. Andrews does in the community. She is the manager of the local Business Improvement District -- businesses working together and investing collectively in local improvements, in addition to those delivered by the statutory authorities. This investment will be of benefit to the businesses involved whilst also contributing to the wider aspirations of the local residential community and the growing local economy.
Each business liable to contribute to the BID in an area can vote on whether or not it goes ahead. If, as in St Andrews, it does, then BID is developed, managed and paid for by the business sector by means of a compulsory BID levy. The set-up here was developed in close consultation with local businesses and the BID board consists of local business owners/managers and representatives from Fife Council.
The operating principle is that local businesses decide what improvements they want for the area in order to benefit the local economy, trade and employment. It involves working in the community, and developing strong links between businesses, residents, community groups, local authorities and other agencies. Marketing and promotion is directed at both the community and visitors through the radio, press and social media, and BID already has a proven track record in both lobbying and championing business concerns with the local Council, police and other public bodies.
Rhonda answered many questions after her talk and was thanked for her visit to the Club by Rotarian James Murray.
