Glenrothes Rotarian and member of the Order of St John, Ewen Macdonald, talked about the Order, its history and its current work.
It is formally known as The Most Venerable Order of St. John of Jerusalem, is a Royal Order of Chivalry and, currently, Queen Elizabeth 11 is the Sovereign Head of the Order of St John.
It is a Christian Order but welcomes people of any faith or no faith who are motivated to share its mission - the Service of Humanity. Its symbol is the eight-pointed cross which has remained an enduring emblem of humanitarian care dating back almost 1000 years.
After explaining some of the fascinating history of the Order, Ewen went on to talk about its support for mountain rescue in Scotland, its provision of volunteer drivers for renal patients in Fife, first responders in Angus and provision of defibrillators throughout Edinburgh. Other equally important services are provided throughout the UK and abroad.
The commonalities between the work of the Rotary Club of St Andrews and the Order of St John were emphasized including the club’s association with Heart Start and its Arclight Project taking sight-saving equipment to Malawi where the Order is also active.
In his vote of thanks Rotarian Walter Hill referred to Rotaty’s mission to inspire. No talk, he said, could have proved more inspiring than Ewen’s on the Order of St John.
