Member, Walter Hill , talked about Clube Regatta do Flamengo - Flamingo Rowing Club - and how it became the world famous Brazilian football team Flamengo.
The journey began with English Public Schools’ football which survived the advent of rugby and continues to this day - Prince Harry played at Eton. Before professionalisation the FA had adopted their rule book and the last amateur side to win the FA cup was Eton Old Boys. Queens Park played with distinction in the FA Cup prior to the formation of the Scottish FA with its own competition.
A Scottish civil engineer, working in São Paulo, sent his son to school in Southampton and, on his return, he joined other English educated young men to form Brazil’s fist football club,  Corinthians. Following growth of the game there, it expanded to Rio where many of the traditional rowing clubs began to play. One, of course, was Flamengo.
How a rowing club for affluent expatriates became a football team, drawing its support mainly from the slum dwellers of the favelas, is a long and complicated story. However, none of this would have happened but for a group of English Public School boys and a Scottish engineer.
