At tonight’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw the President's ‘beyond the tea towel’ talk on famous Scots was on William Paterson from Dumfriesshire, who, in 1694, founded the Bank of England.
Past President Paul Begley gave an update on the third pigeon race of the summer session which was from Appleby, last Saturday. The winning Rotarians were Jane Allan, Gordon Megahy and James Gibbons.
The winners of the monthly Numbers Club draw were Andrew Murray, Tom McPherson and Peter McCrossan.
Continuing with members addressing the club during the summer session, Past President Ian St John spoke about his working life which started with an apprenticeship with Philips, the light bulb manufacturer. After a short break while working in England, Ian returned to Philips, working his way up the promotion ladder to become the senior factory manager in Hamilton. At its height, Phillips was producing 62 million tungsten lights per annum. When he left Philips, in the early 1980's, Ian purchased a Post Office in Wishaw which he ran for 14 years until he retired.
The vote of thanks was proposed by Des Donnelly.
