VoT: John McGeary

President Andrew Murray opened tonight’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw with his usual "Beyond the Tea Towel" talk which was about Alexander Fleming who was credited with the process of identifying penicillin.

Our guest speaker was Will Anderson who was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) camp the Abernethy Trust’s Outdoor and Adventure Centre at Ardeonaig. This has been the venue for all the camps since RYLA was established, in Scotland, by West Linton & District R.C. in 1991 and championed by our Past President and Past District Governor, John Mair.

The location of Ardeonaig and the quality of both the accommodation and Centre staff, also make a major contribution to the success and enjoyment of RYLA which is designed to encourage the development of future community, business and professional leaders by utilising outdoor adventure activities to improve young people’s self-confidence, teamwork and leadership skills.

The RYLArians are involved in a variety of exciting activities during the week, high and low ropes assault course, gorge-walking, river canoeing, cliff-climbing and hill-walking - all required teamwork, with each individual having to play his part to ensure success. It was very satisfying to witness leadership qualities discussed during some of the evening sessions being displayed by the young people acting as leaders in each activity.

Will said that RYLA gave him practical experience to develop his leadership skills as well as a range of other skills, from problem solving to social skills. Will said that to be perfectly honest, he wasn’t looking forward to RYLA. He said that he was nervous about spending a week with total strangers. But the first day presentation and activities ensured that he got to know people and made him look forward to the rest of the week. If he had missed out on RYLA he would have been "gutted".

Each year the participants select somebody who in their eyes has developed more than the others at all the tasks undertaken during the week. Will won the John Mair Trophy and at the conclusion of his talk Margaret Mair, John's widow, presented the trophy to Will.

John McGeary proposed the vote of thanks.

The winners of the monthly numbers club were Peter McCrossan, Bob Craig and Jim Peat with Callan Dick winning the weekly bonus ball.
