During his term of office as President 2016 to 2017 John Cheetham chose to support the Croydon Youth Counselling and Support Service. Better known as Croydon Drop In (CDI)
Many people today lack a sense of belonging and, more generally, in society at large there is a restlessness because of a crisis of identity, especially amongst young people.
Established in 1978 and supporting Croydon's young people and families for almost 40 years, CDI is an outstanding example of the Rotary motto "Service above self”. The core volunteer team of young and older people has been at the centre of its work. Indeed John was CDI Hon Secretary in the 1980s and other Club members have also played an important role in supporting CDI since its foundation.
CDI offers free and confidential counselling, advocacy, advice, information and support to young people aged 11 to 25 years old, and their families, who live work or study in Croydon. This service is available at the CDI office in the heart of Croydon, 132 Church Street, and via the mobile outreach team based on the Talkbus, which visits all parts of Croydon, its schools, colleges and community centres.
It was Talkbus and the Outreach Team on which the club focussed their support throughout the year.
