Age Concern

The weekly meeting of The Rotary Club of Kirkcaldy was held at the Dean Park Hotel on Tuesday 27^th March. There were 21 members in attendance and two visiting Rotarians. 

Presidents business included mention that the tree planting at Beveridge Park will take place on Wednesday 11^th April at 10am. SVP Robert Main provided an update on the programme for the Ingolstadt visit which will will include visits to Kingsbarns Distillery, a day at Cluny Clays and a fellowship dinner at The Old Manor Hotel.

The Secretary relayed that the Council meeting was to be held on the 9^th April at 6pm and that reports for this should be received the 3^rd April, also the Club AGM is to be held on the 10^th April and Committee Chairs will need to do a short presentation.

The Speaker was Club Member PP Ken Kelly and the topic Age Concern. Ken has been the Chairman of Age Concern Kirkcaldy since 1977. Previously known as The Old Peoples Welfare Committee the enterprise has been working for many years to assist senior citizens. Age Concern aims to include senior citizens in the community and more importantly keep them active within the community. There is a drop in centre located at the Salvation Army premises in the High Street and they hold a weekly meeting on a Thursday. At the Thursday meeting there are both bakers and helpers, Ken mentioned that he was one of the bakers, but does not decide what his bake is until it is finished. One of the helpers retired recently at the age of 98, she used to say that she liked to help the old one’s and is still a regular at the meetings. Age concern assists seniors in many ways but there is particular emphasis on the social aspect with various events being organised and also excursions by bus. At Christmas they provide Christmas boxes, which are greatly appreciated, and also hold a small Christmas get together. Ken finished off by saying that the committee is now ageing themselves and hinted that some younger volunteers would be most welcome.
