14 September 2017  Health Supplements – Dharminder Singh- Keyworth Pharmacy

Dharminder gave a talk on health, nutrition and supplements. He explained that, whilst we get most of our nutritional requirements from the food that we eat, these do not always provide the quantities of vitamins and minerals necessary for optimum health.  This was particularly true of Vitamin D, sufficient quantities of which should normally be synthesised in the body from exposure to sunlight, is often deficient due to current lifestyles. His recommendation are on an ‘evidence based’ approach and Vitamin D is important to grow & repair cells, turning food into energy. In addition, other mineral supplements, e.g. magnesium, are often required in greater amounts than are currently available in many processed foods, which is particularly important to the 65+ generation.  He also mentioned Vitamin C for colds, probiotics (yoghurt) for digestive issues and coconut oil, rather than butter or lard for cooking.  The talk was well received by the club and prompted a number of interesting questions from members.
