Weekly meeting with guest speaker

The Rotary Club returned to their weekly meeting last week after their sports' nights with President Scott Elliot in the chair to hear an excellent, illustrated lecture by Iain 'Scocha' Scott on the history of Hawick Archaeological Society.  It was at the invitation of Past President Billy McWatters who did the introduction.  Iain followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather in the Society by holding identical posts including President.  The Society was formed in 1856 and is one of the oldest in the country and he traced its history since then when six prominent businessmen formed the Society up to its present day.  He covered all aspects including their various meeting places, artefacts held in the museum, lectures, field trips, plaques placed in the town, published books, notable events like the false alarm bonfires and, of course, the annual publication of the Transactions which are priceless for their contents and many other aspects of the Society.  There is a close affiliation with the Rotary Club as several Rotarians have served over the years on the Society's committees and held the post of President.
The members thoroughly enjoyed Iain's excellent lecture which evoked many questions after which Scott Elliot gave a well-deserved vote of thanks.
