Tommy Mulvee: George Pilch - Woodworking

Thu, Aug 24th 2017 at 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Weekly meeting with guest speaker

A good turnout attended last week's meeting of the Rotary Club with President Scott Elliot in the chair.  The speaker was George Pilch, Denholm, introduced by Tommy Mulvee, who explained his Computer Numerically Controlled apparatus for making a wide variety of objects, mainly in wood, but also in metal, plastics and paper.  He constructed the machine himself from scratch which, by means of a computerised system involving 000's of settings, can plan and execute an object.  He uses all kinds of wood and brought along some wonderful finished examples of his work in the form of circular cribbage boards, plaques and plates.  He takes on commission work and has produced them for golf clubs and masonic clubs.  He never puts a tool to the wood by his own hand but, once set-up, the machine does it all automatically.
An intriguing talk, well delivered, held the members enthralled after which George took questions before the President gave the vote of thanks.  Gale Willmer, London, was a most welcome visitor to the club.  One of the hotel staff Niamh Rafferty is leaving to go to the West of Scotland University, Paisley, next week to study chemistry and the club sent her off with their best wishes and a small presentation.
