There was no speaker at last week's meeting of the Rotary Club with President Scott Elliot in the chair so, instead, the members reviewed the financial state of the club which was found to be satisfactory. Three members then regaled the company with their reminiscences of a variety of subjects. Jim Walker thought back to when he was a boy and his first ride on the footplate of a steam train and, also as a boy, on a visit to the flight deck of a DC10 aeroplane en route to Canada. Sandy Bannerman recalled his recent cruise to Spain from which he had just returned. There was a practice rescue by a helicopter which was for real a day or two later when a passenger took seriously ill and had to be uplifted and taken to a hospital on the mainland. Jock Thorburn gave an account of some amusing incidents when he was a Scotland in Bloom judge and travelled all over the country in the role.
