Wilf Cameron on Bee-keeping

Tue, Aug 22nd 2017 at 5:45 pm - 7:45 pm

Wilf Cameron enthralled our members with an inspiring talk on his erstwhile hobby of bee-keeping. Many members were aware of Wilf's enthusiasm for this productive hobby, having sampled over the years the results of the labours of his untiring workers. As Barbara Acheson mentioned in her vote of thanks, this was the first time Wilf had spoken to us formally about his passion for apis mellifera.

It is likely that bees were first domesticated in ancient Egypt, where beekeeping is depicted in tomb paintings. We also heard of the honey-filled gold sarcophagus of Alexander the Great, though Wilf opined that the honey may not be as well-preserved as the corpse.
