37 Rotarians, 4 members of Inner Wheel, and our speaker, David Welch of Crewkerne Club attended the meeting. Keith Bigwood, President Elect, made his debut in Colin’s absence.
David Welch spoke on the subject of EVAG – the Rotary Emergency Volunteers Action Group. This has now become established as a recognised contributor to local emergencies. He elaborated on the four major elements of their work – training Spontaneous Responders, Analysis of probability of emergencies, Staffing and stocking a warehouse, and Preparation of a recovery programme. This format has also been recognised by neighbouring County Authorities. District 1200 Clubs are being encouraged to appoint an Officer in each Club ready to organise members if required to help out in an emergency. John Bird gave the vote of thanks, but wondered why Rotary GB&I had not made more of this excellent initiative.
