The emphasis was on youth at last week's
Rotary Club meeting when firstly Quin Arthur, a 6th year pupil at the High
School, reported on his attendance at the annual leadership camp in the
summer in Perthshire organised by Rotary. The course was geared on
team-work and leadership and Quin gave a power-presentation on undertakings of
rock climbing, canoeing, mountain walking and a 2-day event spending a night
under canvas. He also had to prepare and give a presentation to the rest
of the course. Later he undertook a charity fund-raising walk in the
Pentlands in atrocious weather.
The second speaker was Anna Casalme, a
young lady from Los Angeles, California, who is on a one-year Rotary sponsored
course at Edinburgh University covering childhood studies and social
policy. She also undertakes field studies all over Scotland which she
finds interesting and exciting and thinks the country and people are
wonderful. She is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Chino, Los Angeles
and she is a member of Rotaract in that club. She did a presentation on
her family and life and how she secured her study placement and expressed her
appreciation for all the support Rotary has given her especially the Hawick club
and Ron and Pat Sutherland in particular. Both speakers were introduced by
Ron Sutherland and President Scott Elliot gave the vote of thanks. Max Arthur,
father of Quin, also attended the meeting as a guest visitor.
A party of twelve Rotarians including
wives accompanied President Scott at the District Conference at Newcastle at the
weekend where they joined other Rotarians from the South of Scotland and took a
full part in the Conference which was thoroughly enjoyed by all and they were
accompanied by Anna.
