Speaker 30 October 3017 - Trevor Simpson.

He was born and bred in Calderdale and has written two books on the “swinging 60’s” in Halifax.

50 artists with over a 100 number one hits performed at venues in Halifax. Dusty Springfield’s first solo performance was at such a venue in Halifax.

Cliff Richard in 1959 was one of the first to perform at the odeon cinema which is now a bingo hall.

Another venue - Marlborough Hall was co owned by Shirley Crabtree aka big daddy the wrestler along with his 2 brothers. Artists included screaming lord such, lulu and the tremolones.

Alexandra Hall was the poshest dance hall in the town - moody blues, billy j Kramer and a lot of up and coming local bands performed here.

The empress ballroom which was run by a lady attracted Herman’s Hermits, the Kinks and the Paramount plus many other acts before they really hit the limelight.

Another venue was the Jazz Club which was in a basement. Acts here included Rod Stewart & Aker Bilk.

Finally the Halifax Victoria Theatre. Shirley Bassey gave 2 performances here along with the Jackson 5 plus Cilla, Andy Williams and little Richard.

Trevor’s books are sadly sold out Small town Saturday night but a dvd that Trevor has made. Halifax past present and future showcases the venues mentioned and The proceeds of this dvd are going towards hospital radio. Anyone interested can request a copy at www.pathwaysvideo.co.uk
