The moon was “Half a Sixpence”, the sun was just rising on a cold frosty morning…….When 14 Members, 2 speakers and 5 guests from Law and Accountancy met at The Stragglers Bar for a productive session.
Led by Rory and Kathryn, the first outline was from John Binns on the progress of the Link One centre project, at Halcon, Taunton. Richard and Lee from TDBC, then spoke of their involvement in sourcing funds from the National Lottery, Government Grants, and Taunton Council support, to set up a drop-in-café style venue. The Club are involved as advisers, and we have agreed to supply a cooker for the new kitchen units being obtained from Wickes, and ASDA have agreed to supply the utensils and crockery. This will launch the training of healthy eating habits, cooking skills, self-esteem of unemployed persons, and provide a social venue for lonely elderly folk. Once set up, it will be a spring board to build a commercial kitchen and bakery with enhanced cookers, and our domestic cooker will go to another centre for further use.
It is hoped that our Club, [plus perhaps the Mother Club], will provide volunteers to advise and mentor, provide links to businesses, and support the Trustees.
There will be an Open Day on Saturday next, the 10th February
The consultation with residents of the 3 estates; Lane, Halcon and Lambrook will take place at 3 centres. Anyone wishing to attend to help or simply to better understand the issues should meet around 0930 onwards at:
The Link Centre
123 Outer Circle
Halcon
TA1 2DE
If any difficulties dial 01823 350788 (the Link Centre)
P.S. The Open Day for the Halcon Link Centre on Saturday 10th February, was in All Saints Church Hall next door to the new premises being adapted. A good response from Inner Wheel and Rotary, for cakes etc, meant a full table of food available for the visitors, and posters of wish lists for activities, soon began to fill up. The overall attendance was disappointing, but great trees from little acorns grow.
