Meeting at Oake Manor Golf Club

Mon, May 21st 2018 at 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Speakers Chris Turner & Simon West from Edukid, a Devon-based educational charity working in Uganda, Palestine and Cambodia.

At Oake Manor, 26 Members and two Speakers, plus 4 visiting Rotarians, enjoyed the meal, and President Colin welcomed the guests.
Rotary GB&I President Denis Spiller and 3 from Strood RC, had arrived in a VW Beetle decorated with Purple4Polio stickers, having already travelled 350 miles that day, and going on to Newport overnight. They were part of a cavalcade of vintage and heritage cars aiming to raise awareness of Rotary and the Purple4Polio campaign. A collecting box was passed around.
Next, was a teacher from Queen’s College, another involved with Edukid, a Charity which links children from their projects in Asia, Africa and the Middle East direct to partner schools in the UK. The example shown was in Cambodia.
In each village they select two local people capable of teaching others, and provide them with training and resources to enable them to give an extra one hour’s supplementary education to each child every day after school. They also co-operate with School-in-a-Bag Charity
Once a year, each child is supplied with a “school pack” that contains what they need to attend school for the year. All the clothing is individually sized to fit them. They also provide university scholarships, and have helped children become qualified nurses, doctors, accountants and lawyers.
Students and teachers from Queen’s had benefited by seeing conditions quite different from their own, and had drawn up programmes which reflected the aims and ambitions of the Cambodians. See www.edukid.org.uk for further info
